India has a higher percentage of stressed people compared to most other large developed and developing countries. Recent surveys show that over 85% of people here said they were suffering from stress. That is very high, especially when we consider that a large majority of these are youngsters, from 26-32, an age group that is predominant in India’s IT & ITES Sectors. These results convey a very important message to Corporates that their Employee Heath & Wellness should focus on the feel good factor too, increasing the happiness quotient.
Ensuring the wellbeing of Employees has now become a Corporate Responsibility, with the workplace being the place where employees today spend most of their waking hours. It thus plays a very important role in their health, making it essential to include health and wellness programs in every employee’s package.
Stress at the workplace doesn’t arise only due to work load and deadlines. It is contributed in equal measure by office politics, favouritism shown by seniors, lack of outsets like a grievance cell, lack of appreciation of the work being etc. So any Wellbeing Program initiated by the Employer needs to look at preventive measures like group activities, counselling to seniors and team leaders on managing and building teams, managing grievances, making office interiors employee friendly and techniques like yoga and meditation to avoid getting into a stressed out situation.
Work related stress also comes from long commute time, bad sleep patterns, lack of enough exercise or holiday breaks. All these are today leading to working professionals facing a host of health issues like backache, neck pain, headaches and chronic diseases like hypertension resulting in declining productivity, high attrition rates and high absenteeism due to stress-related illness.
Employers have now understood that employees need to be engaged and made to remain back in their organisations. For this they need to be valued, with every effort being taken to help them achieve wellness. Some of the measures being undertaken are setting up inside the offices gyms, yoga rooms and diet kitchens and involving the employees in socially relevant activities, that make them feel good.
