How to minimize ‘Shift Work’ health disorders

Night shift work in BPOs and most IT Companies in India just cannot be avoided. But what can be avoided or definitely minimised are the effects of such work on the health of the night shift worker. When a person works at night and sleeps during the day on a regular basis there is an interruption to the circadian rhythms which control hunger, the ability to sleep, mood and energy level, resulting in high anxiety levels, tiredness, bouts of sadness, headaches, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers and even heart disease.

To reduce these effects the Organisation can:

  • Provide sufficient breaks during the shift
  • Encourage them to do some physical activity, walk or exercise at the work spot during the breaks
  • Ensure the worker does not extend the shift and do overtime
  • Ensure convenient transport and reduce commute time as much as possible, so they get more time at home for sleeping
  • Ensure shifts are not rotated more than once in a week
  • Ensure the shifts are arranged so that they get full use of holidays – for catching up on sleep
  • Discourage the worker trying to stay awake by excess of coffee drinking.
  • Ensure workers get enough time between rotating shifts to reset their body clocks and convalesce
  • Ensure workers eat the right food. A proper diet goes a long way in mitigating the health effects
  • Closely monitor their health, with regular check-ups and access to a Physician.
