Sedentary, Desk based job. Don’t worry. Here are some tips to stay healthy

Eight hours at a table, sitting in front of your Computer, 5-6 days a week is otherwise a sure recipe to bad health. You will put on those extra calories and extra fat in all the wrong places, develop stomach ulcers, get eye, neck and back strain. All these can be part and parcel of your work unless you start doing things differently, starting from right now.

Here are 7 easy to follow’ tips that can help you stay healthy and in shape at work.

  • Have a good breakfast before leaving for office. More than half our digestion problems start from keeping our stomach empty too long.
  • Go slow on the fried snacks that you share with your co-workers during the day. Guaranteed to add hundreds of calories to your daily diet. Instead, whenever you feel hungry have a piece of fruit, a banana even, or just a few almonds or our good old ground nuts. Keep a small stock in your desk.
  • Occasionally get a breath of fresh air, just stand up, open the window nearest to you, take some deep breaths, stay standing for a few minutes look outside, do mild stretches of your neck and back and then get back to work. You’ll feel in a much better mood too, to take up that boring task you have kept postponing all day
  • Drink water as often as you can. It’s the elixir of life and you need to finish at least one litre  during the day. Being well hydrated is the key to good health
  • Use every opportunity to get up from your seat and walk, even if it’s just to discuss with your colleague a few rooms or desks away. Avoid chatting with them over the net or telephone. That short walk will help burn calories, de-stress and refresh you.
  • Get lunch from home, if that’s possible, otherwise go to a good, clean restaurant nearby and have a light meal, preferably of some rice or chapatis, a sambar or some dal and vegetables. Eating a healthy lunch is an essential part of a balanced diet.
  • And then the most important part, don’t take work home, especially on weekends. You need that bit of relaxation both every day, and at the end of every week, to get recharged for getting back to useful, productive work
