Hypertension is a silent killer, most important 5 facts

1. Hypertension is a silent killer: High blood pressure in general is not associated with any symptoms. Almost 20% of the people with high blood pressure do not know that they are suffering from hypertension. Though hypertension is not associated with symptoms, it will leave you with serious problems.

2. High blood pressure shouldn’t be left untreated: High blood pressure when left untreated will lead to increased risk of stroke, blood vessel, heart attack, and heart failure. For every 20mmHg increase in systolic blood pressure and 10mmHg increase in diastolic blood pressure the risk for heart disease will be doubled.

3. Your medicine cabinet commonly tends to put you at risk of hypertension: Most of the over the counter medications tend to increase the blood pressure. Especially pain medications or pain killers like ibuprofen and medications for common cold that contain pseudoephedrine, when taken most often, puts you at higher risk of hypertension.

4. People with high blood pressure generally need 2 or more medications: Most people with high blood pressure need to take 2 or more medications in-order to maintain their blood pressure at normal level or to lower the blood pressure to 140/85mmHg.

5. White coat hypertension shouldn’t be ignored: Most people tend to ignore white coat hypertension which is a case in which blood pressure is increased while in doctor’s office alone. It is mandatory that such individuals should check their blood pressure regularly and it shouldn’t be ignored. It is also revealed that people with white coat hypertension are at greater risk of developing sustained high blood pressure than individuals with normal blood pressure.
