Dr. P L Rao after his stint at Aravind, in 1993, he and his wife, Dr. H. Bharathi who is also an ophthalmologist, started their own center, Modern Eye Hospital & Research Centre, in Nellore. Dr Rao calls his wife the key person behind the establishment of the hospital. “She did her DO from Aravind (Madurai) and she got FPMS from Dr. I Howard Fine,” Dr. Rao says proudly. They started with a bank loan and an initial patient load of 20 OPD cases a day, 10 staff and 500 surgeries annually. Today, MEH&RC is a state of the eye-care institution, with special emphasis on pediatric ophthalmology. The hospital also has a well-equipped retina department, headed by Dr. Bharathi, who looks after the vitreo-retinal and uveal services in the hospital, while the Cataract and Anterior Segment unit is headed by Dr. O Gopala Krishna, who did his MS from Kurnool Medical College and also trained at the Wilmer Eye Hospital, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA.

"We have achieved maximum success rate in cataract surgeries, squint and glaucoma," says Dr. Rao. He uses the Sovereign with White star technology (AMO) for Phacoemulsification Surgeries. At present the hospital performs approximately 2400 cataract surgeries per year, almost 100% phaco. That includes at least 10 multifocal IOL implants every month. Besides cataract surgeries annually, the hospital does 1000 other anterior segment surgeries.

Dr. Rao’s retinal cases volume is also noteworthy - approximately 2000 laser procedures and 1200 digital angiography’s procedures. That apart, he does around 5000 free cataract surgeries per year, again mostly SICS unless contraindicated in which case he opts for ECCE surgery.
