Maida – The white poison!
I think I might hurt the feelings of a lot of Paratha lovers, but yes, it’s true, Maida or refined flour is one of the biggest causes of type II diabetes.
Foods that are made from maida have a high glycaemic index(G.I) e.g. foods like noodles, pasta, white bread, etc. As maida has a high G.I, it will release sugars into the bloodstream quickly. This causes a sharp insulin response, which over a period of time, with prolonged consumption of processed and refined food, causes inflammation, insulin resistance and eventually type II diabetes.
So next time when you are at the supermarket, I hope you won’t have a doubt when you choose the brown bread.
White flour has been called the “glue of the gut” it all turns to glue in the intestines. It is without fiber, it congests the system, slows down digestion creating a sluggish metabolism, and can often be the cause of weight gain, stress, headaches and migraines.
The odd stomach ache might be a cumulative effect of the refined flour on your intestine.

Acidity is another factor that Maida can bring about,
As per research, diet high in acidic foods (e.g. Pizza, Pasta, Burger & other white flour products) forces the body to pull calcium from bones to keep the things even, which affects bone density. Over-acidity is one of the major causes of chronic inflammation, and a major cause of arthritis and other chronic illnesses.
Eating Maida also raises bad cholesterol (LDL) resulting many health issues like weight gain, high blood pressure, mood swings. So too much of it and you’ll end up with obesity.
There are a bunch of alternatives to Maida, wheat Paratha’s and Chappathi’s are almost the immediate alternatives to Maida.
But it all comes down to how you handle your Pizza cravings, next time you go past Dominoes just look down and tie your shoelace.
