In January 1997, Dr. Thangavelu started the MV Eye Care Centre, and has been associated with it since then as Medical Director. Besides, he has served as a Medical Officer at various health centres during the course of his career. He has also been involved in the area of training, as a Tutor in Ophthalmology at the Coimbatore Medical College, and as Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and the Karpagam Faculty of Medical Sciences and Research. Other assignments taken up by Dr. Thangavelu include serving as Honorary Consultant at Sankara Eye Care Centre, Coimbatore, and performing free eye camps, cataract surgeries and school screening programmes under the National Programme for Control of Blindness, since 1992.
