In the year 1985, Dr. K. K. Gopinathan working as a Gynaecologist & Obstetrician in the government sector, realized the growing need for quality health care in remote areas of Kerala. Driven by this desire to serve mankind better, he and a few of his friends decided to establish a hospital in the small remote town of Edappal in north Kerala. Though the foundation stone was laid in 1986, his commitments to the government service delayed the project until Edappal hospitals kicked off its services in January 1990.

With a humble beginning and limited number of 20 beds, it soon grew to be a landmark institution in the locality having advanced medical technology, well qualified efficient doctors and an excellent paramedical team. Today, Edappal Hospital has 350 beds, and numerous departments – all specialties and major super specialties. The hospital was the first to get an ISO certification in the district of Malappuram. Outside the medical arena, Edappal Hospitals has won several awards for pollution control from the Government of Kerala.

Gopinathan, the department grew to be one of the largest in the state, delivering over 400 babies every month.
